Abstract

The paper presents a full set of documents from Alexey Losev’s personal file drawn from the State Academy of Artistic Sciences holdings (Russian State Archive of Literature and Art: f. 941, inv. 10, item 363). The materials cover the period from 1922 to 1930. They provide an important insight into the study of Alexey Losev’s teaching and research activities during those years. The file provides evidence that, in addition to Losev’s generally recognized work at The Nizhniy Novgorod University, The State Institute of Musical Science, The State Academy of Artistic Sciences and The Moscow Conservatory, he also worked at the 2nd MSU Higher Pedagogical Foreign Languages Courses, was a professor of the history of worldviews in The Medical-Pedological Institute and the titular member of The Pedological Institute. The paper allows us to get a proper view on the gamut of Losev’s academic interests, as well as to pursue the chronological sequence of his scholarly talks delivered at The State Academy of Artistic Sciences and their range of topics, the origins and the evolution of his scientific ideas as well as his organizational and scientific activity at the Section of Music and the Physical-Psychological Section and at the Department of History of the Office of Historical Terminology in the Philosophy Division of the State Academy of Artistic Sciences, where Losev was chairman. As a supplement to Losev’s file, we also publish the text of his talk from April 19, 1924, where he addresses the goals of the Subdivision of the History of Aesthetics of the Academy’s Division of Philosophy. These documents also provide insight into the state of Russian science (including the living conditions of the scientific community) during the first post-Revolution decade.
